KEVIN R. ROBERTS--THE NEIGHBORHOOD PHOTOGRAPHER
Kevin R. Roberts is a freelance writer and photographer who is best known for his limited-edition art posters showcasing the neighborhood bars and restaurants of New Orleans.
Kevin brings a unique perspective to his photography because he knows the city and appreciates her idiosyncrasies. Born in Hollygrove in 1953, he grew up in River Ridge, where he graduated from East Jefferson High School and LSU. Recruited for executive marketing positions with RCA, Philips, and LG Electronics, he quit the corporate world and moved back to his hometown.
Back in New Orleans, he re-invented himself as a new style of restaurant critic--one who did not criticize. Instead of pointless rankings and fluffy filler, he discussed the menu, the history, the space, the clientele, and the family. Over the years, he published four editions of his "New Orleans Neighborhood Restaurant Guide". His guide showed an exterior photo of each listing. It focused on the top 40 neighborhood restaurants that served New Orleans cuisine. The book created an underground buzz with informed locals and savvy visitors.
After the flood, Kevin adapted his business plan to a broken marketplace. He shifted his focus to his art and developed a collection of 11 x 14" commemorative prints with captions. Images such as Hubig's Pies, Rock 'n' Bowl, and River Shack Tavern; all impulse-priced at $25.00.
In 2008, he published a limited-edition of 20 signed & numbered archive prints, mounted with a very nice 18 x 24" white conservation mat and backing board. These New Orleans images appeal to locals, as well as, visitors and because the edition is limited to 50 copies, they should appreciate in value, just like his posters have done. Using the latest printing press technology, these digital offset prints are estimated to resist fading for 100+ years, hence the name.
For commercial accounts, Kevin is expanding his portfolio of fine art pigment prints, offered in 3 sizes (home/office/gallery) to fit any decoration budget. These giclee prints need to be seen in person to appreciate their emotional appeal. He can print them on canvas or watercolor paper.
New Orleans is in Kevin's blood. As a child, his father introduced him to the old negro jazzmen at Preservation Hall, while his mother turned him on to "Liuzza's by the hospital" where he was born.
